No students hurt when Blount Co. buses collide

No students were injured when one school bus rear-ended the other on Alcoa Highway near the Neyland Drive exit.

The accident was reported around 9:15 am, in the northbound lanes.

The students were from Carpenters Elementary School in Blount County.  Principal Fred Goins says the kids were on their way to see the Nutcracker ballet at the Civic Auditorium.  Goins says one bus stopped suddenly, and the bus traveling behind it bumped into the back.  There are other buses on the way to pick those students up, and they will be taken back to the school.

There's no official word on whether any other vehicles were involved in the accident.

Powerball officials: 2 winners for record jackpot

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Powerball officials say the record jackpot has been won.

Early Thursday morning officials confirmed that two winning tickets were sold: One in Arizona and one in Missouri. An additional 8,924,123 players won smaller prizes.

The numbers drawn Wednesday night are: 5, 16, 22, 23, 29 and Powerball of 6.

A lottery official said late Wednesday that the jackpot increased to $579.9 million by the time of the drawing, making the cash option $379.8 million.

The drawing Wednesday night for the Multi-State Lottery Association's prize followed 16 consecutive drawings that produced no top winner, boosting the Powerball to the second-largest potential lottery payout in U.S. history.

Tickets earlier Wednesday were selling at a rate of 130,000 a minute nationwide, the jackpot enticing many people who rarely, if ever, play the lottery.

Tenn. awards grants to green development projects

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- Five projects across the state have been awarded grants totaling $127,500 to fund green infrastructure and low-impact development projects.

Awards from Tennessee's Green Development Grant Program include $25,000 to install rain gardens for three Memphis schools.

A $28,000 award will help Knoxville separate its stormwater runoff from its sewage, remove pollution from the runoff and help it infiltrate the ground.

Chattanooga's $28,000 grant funds its Low-Impact Development Excellence Award program to recognize projects using innovative green technologies.

Athens will use its $28,000 grant to test experimental cleaning technologies on local roads, trails and parking lots.

The Southeast Tennessee Development District will receive $18,000 to help 15 municipalities and five counties develop land use regulations to improve stormwater runoff quality.

The grants require a 20 percent local match.

Some East Tennesseans oppose state lottery

Not all East Tennesseans were excited to participate in the nationwide Powerball drawing Wednesday night.

Since state voters approved the decision to unveil lottery games in Tennessee in 2004, some groups have remained opposed to it citing moral concerns.

Dr. William Shiell, pastor at First Baptist Church in downtown Knoxville, told 10News he dislikes the lottery because he believes it preys on the state's impoverished.

"The lottery only further complicates matters and keeps the poorest of the poor, poor," he said.

Shiell, who co-edited a book entitled "The Gambling Culture", also said the state as a whole has become "addicted" to the industry.

"Any kind of gambling, which includes state lotteries, is not a proper use of the resources God has given us," he said.

But, the state contends the lottery is creating positive benefits for Tennesseans.

Kym Gerlock, spokesperson for the Tennessee Education Lottery Corporation, said lotto games have generated more than $2.4 billion for schools and scholarships in Tennessee.

"Our mission is to raise dollars for specific education programs," Gerlock said. "Fifty-eight percent of the voters in Tennessee approved the vote to create a lottery."

But, Shiell says in the end, he does not believe that impoverished students are benefiting from the money their families spend on lottery tickets.

With that taken into account, he said he does believe people are free to make whatever choice they want to on the issue.

"The question that we should be asking is not whether or not they [Tennesseans] should choose to do it [play the lottery], but whether we as a society, as a state government should be encouraging people to," Shiell said.

Happy Holidays from the Boyfriend ?

There don't seem to be as many decent men as their used to be. City police report two men, age 25 and 40, were arrested this week for punching out their girlfriend. Whacked 'em both pretty good from the reports.
Maybe it's just the collateral damage of human interaction, but it seems you shouldn't be feelin' so good about yourself if you punched out a woman.
                                        Violence Against Women Still Prevalent
Some people do, cause they keep on doin' it.
That's job security for cops, counselors and family court, but a very poor reflection on people who continue to think this kind of stuff is OK.

DES MOINES, Iowa -- The record Powerball jackpot just keeps rising. It now stands at $550 million after officials say brisk sales keep driving up the payout amount.

A winner taking the cash option would get $360.2 million before taxes.

The numbers are an estimate and could be increased again as the drawing nears.

Powerball officials say they now believe there is a 75 percent chance that the winning combination of numbers will be drawn Wednesday night.

Klein Wants To Have A ‘Major Role’ On Issues

If Republicans control the State Senate with the help of the Independent Democratic Caucus, it will be a GOP Senate in name only.
IDC leader, Sen. Jeff Klein, says he wants a major role in legislating and he wants to use his leverage to pass a wage hike, pass campaign finance reform and new legislation on reproductive rights.
Dean Skelos may get to play majority leader on TV, but he will not control events, especially in a state where demographics suggest the GOP is listing to port.

In the eight states not part of the Powerball coalition, there much be a lot of scrambling to get to the state next door....
Everyone is talking about the $550 M  jackpot and what they would do with the money.

Then, I'll pick up my shiny new Dodge Dart and head to Chili's for a celebratory dinner! I'll finally be able to live the kind of lifestyle others only dream about!...It'll be great to be me."

Governor Cuomo is still saying he can work with whomever controls the State Senate, and that's really ticking off Democratic loyalists and "progressives" who put party and ideology first.
Some feel the Governor's refusal to go to bat and lean on wobbly Dem newly electeds in the Senate to side with John Sampson is tantamount to disloyalty and a disqualifier in a run for the White House...

Gruden denies Vol coaching deal involving Cleveland Browns

On an ESPN radio show Wednesday morning, Jon Gruden denied a wide-spread rumor he was offered part ownership of the Cleveland Browns as part payment to coach the University of Tennessee Vols football team.

The Monday Night Football analyst has been one of the most talked-about potential coaches on Vol fans' wish lists.

When asked on ESPN's "Mike and Mike Show" if he "had a contract in hand from the University of Tennessee" that included a part of the Jimmy Haslam-owned Browns, Gruden replied "No."

Quickly changing the subject, Gruden went on to say, "I'm just excited about Monday Night Football."

Whether or not a deal with the University of Tennessee not involving ownership of the Cleveland Browns is on the table was not brought up in the interview.

East Tennesseans try their lottery luck for record Powerball prize

As the Powerball jackpot climbs to $500 million, East Tennesseans are trying their luck for a piece of the prize.

Nick Patel runs the Farragut Market where, already, ticket sales are boosting business.

"Easily what we do in a week, we did in one day today," he said Tuesday, more than 24 hours before the Powerball drawing.

Patel's business has sold a high-dollar winning ticket before, which draws customers to return each time the jackpot grows.

"Some people say they've driven 50 miles just to come here and to buy even one ticket," he said.

Lottery officials say Tennesseans have won about $315 million in Powerball prizes since the state joined the game in 2004. Only one of those players, Bobbi Hubbard from South Pittsburg, TN, scored a jackpot. Hers was worth $25.5 million.

"There's nine prize levels, so even if you don't win the jackpot you might win one of the other prizes levels, as well, and all of it is helping education in the state on top of it," said Director of Media Relations for the Tennessee Lottery, Kym Gerlock.

"All of our profit, all of the money that we make goes to fund specific education programs in the state of Tennessee. That's primarily scholarships and grants to higher education institutions in Tennessee," she said. So far, $2.47 billion has been raised for those programs.

Gerlock explained how the money is divided in Tennessee:

About 27 cents of every lottery dollar goes to education funding, while about 62 cents of every dollar contributes to lottery prizes. The remaining amount is split between retailers who sell the tickets and operational costs.

The price of a Powerball ticket went up this year, from $1 to $2. Gerlock says the goal was to create a bigger pot for winners and the educational funding.

"That was one of the things in mind," she said. "More millionaires and more, bigger jackpots. And certainly we're seeing that coming true since those changes have taken place."

Keith Burnett tried his luck at the Farragut Market Tuesday.

"When it gets this big... something draws me to it, I guess," he said, already making plans to spend the winnings.

"For friends and family that needed it. I'd take care of everybody I know."

Hundreds lose unemployment benefits due to new state law

The Tennessee Career Center helps East Tennesseans looking for work

The state's new unemployment law has hundreds of people losing their benefits, and officials say that's because they have not been following the rules and looking for work.

Every week, the state audits 1,000 people to see if they are looking for jobs as required under state law to keep unemployment benefits. Of the audits completed so far, about 400 have failed and lost their benefits. That's saved the state more than $100,000 so far.

Regardless, state officials say once people follow the law, they can get their benefits back.

"It's not necessarily fraud that we're talking about. It has more to do with people don't know that this is a requirement. That's why when people find out they aren't in compliance, they get back on board very quickly," said Jeff Hentschel with the Tennessee Department of Labor.

Also, thousands of unemployment checks went out to people who were not supposed to get them. Now, the Department of Labor is working with the IRS to deduct that money from those people's tax returns.

Can Anchors Make Enough to Afford Their Own Makeup in Small Markets ?

Anchoring the news is still a heady and somewhat prestigious gig, but if money is your thing, in smaller markets you are better off being a cop, a teacher or even a waitress in a busy restaurant or bar.
A survey of anchor salaries ranges from a low of $18,500 to Diane Sawyer's $12M at ABC.
Here in Watertown, based on what I know from my time in the biz long ago, I would say the senior anchors here make in the $50 to $ 60K range with the newbies  probably clocking in at $20K to $30K.
As local news operations have shrunk, so have salaries..but regardless of the money you can't put a price on being recognized on the street...Or so the boss tells you.
I recall a conversation years ago with I think it was Dennis Honeywell....he was carping about pay and the boss told him its a prestigious job...
"I had a bowl of that prestige for breakfast and it wasn't very filling," said Dennis.....Or if he didn't say, he should have.

Senate Race Heads to the Courts

Observers will get to see a Florida style dispute near Albany as both major parties jockey to win a State Senate race in the newly minted 46th SD where Republican George Amedore holds a thin 110 vote lead over Democrat Cecilia Tkaczyk.
Absentee and affidavit ballots have been counted in Ulster County where the Democrat has closed the margin with townships like Woodstock where Ms. Tkaczyk garnered 80% of the vote.
The fight now shifts to the courtroom where some 1,000 disputed ballots will be argued over. Democrats say they are confident these will go their way. I suspect many of the disputes center on whether the voter really lives in the district.
The race is essentially a tie but when its that close there is a fight over every vote. It's about winning and the decisions of a judge will shape the result.
With the Senate split down the middle, every seat is a battleground.
The irony here is that the Senate GOP had expanded the size of the body in a bid to give themselves a free upstate seat....The 46th race was not as easy as they thought it would be.

The War on Christmas Seldom Visits Most of America, Including Us

Every year about this time the War on Christmas flares up with skirmishes usually only catching the watchful eye of FOX News while the other secular humanist and atheist media focus on their wars like the one on women raging around Susan Rice.

The War on Christmas isn't touching Watertown where this Friday we celebrate the holiday by calling it Christmas and lighting a tree called a Christmas tree.

Hudson River guide pleads guilty after client drowns | NCPR News

A big black eye for the rafting business as a guide for one of the companies operating on the Black River in Watertown has pleaded guilty to being drunk while one of his passengers died in a rafting mishap in eastern NY.
Hudson River Rafting employed the man and the firm has also caught the attention of the AG.
It's a serious allegation as the sport has its potential dangers and those who sign up for a trip on the Hudson or the Black River often have no such skills and rely on the people in charge for their safety.
Many people take these trips every year without incident, but the festive and social atmosphere of a trip doesn't mask the obligation of the guides to be professional and sober.

Warehouse Bidder Fails to Close...Structure Likely to Head Back to Auction

With today's passing of a deadline to close on the purchase of the former Fort Drum Storage warehouse on West Main Street, City Council will have to decide the building's fate and that likely will be a second auction sometime over the winter.

Meanwhile the 10% down payment paid by Ruby Williams at the time of the original auction is forfeited..That's $12,500.
When property is seized for overdue taxes as this one was, an auction is held and the high bidder puts 10% down and must close within 30 days. That didn't happen despite a ten day extension.
The circumstances around this property were unusual, but sticking with the auction process is best. In the first auction the numbers got run up in a bidding frenzy and a competing bidder told me in a second go around he doesn't see bidding it up that high...Let's find out.

Investigator: Father of Emilliano Terry speaks out

CLEVELAND -- Tuesday night the father of 3-year-old Emilliano Terry is speaking out about the mother as investigators search her apartment for clues as to what happened to the boy.

The father said she was depressed and miserable and now he wants to know what happened.

Investigators showed up at Terry's home Tuesday evening looking for answers.

The Investigator Tom Meyer was busy talking with both the father and a grandparent, who were both critical of Camilia Terry as a mother.

Watch: Mother of boy found dead laid out her life on YouTube

Written by
WKYC Web Staff

CLEVELAND -- The mother of 3-year-old Emilliano Terry, Camilia Terry, who reported him missing early Sunday evening, remains in police custody Tuesday.

She is not charged with any crime but police say their search for Emilliano went in a different direction after her statements early Monday afternoon became "inconsistent."

Camilia Terry, now 20, does not have a police record but was recently released from foster care and Channel 3 has learned that she had her first child at age 14, then had two others.

She has posted multiple videos of herself on YouTube -- many of which showcase her singing.

In one of the YouTube videos, she says she's 18 and wants to go to college and then become a lawyer, saying she has been writing songs since she was 10, singing songs since she was 5.

Some of the YouTube videos are entitled "I'll make it," "Need a Friend," "Me as Me"," "Camilia Terry" and others.

There are also multiple songs attributed to Camilia Terry posted on reverbnation.com. Some of the song titles are "Burning Inside", "Forever" and "Filled With Ivy."

Investigator: Numerous abuse reports involving mom

CLEVELAND -- By all accounts, Camilia Terry had a rough life, but she also dished out her share of abuse to her own children, including Emilliano, according to his father and those who knew her.

Police discovered the body of 3-year-old Emilliano Terry stuffed in a garbage bag at a local trash processing plant Monday night. They arrested his mother in connection with the death.

Camilia Terry was 14 years old and in the care of county social services in 2007 when she gave birth to her first child, court records show.

Related story: Mother of boy found dead laid her life out on YouTube

Three years ago, Terry brought Emilliano into the world, and just five months ago she had a third son.

A spokeswoman for Cuyahoga County Department of Children and Family Services said the agency has received a number of calls, alleging Terry abused her children, dating back to 2007.

However, none of the allegations was ever substantiated, said DCFS spokeswoman Mary Louise Madigan.

Emilliano's father, Shawn Dotson, says that Terry changed after the birth of their son.

"She wasn't the same," Dotson said. "She was very depressed and stressed out...miserable. He was neglected. She didn't really give him as much attention or really care for him like she did the other children."

Dotson says he hasn't seen Emilliano for more than a year, believing that he was still living out of state with his mother. He said Terry continually dodged his attempts to connect with the boy.

In fact, Terry sent Emilliano more than a year ago to live with her grandfather in Mississippi so she could concentrate on caring for her older boy and attend school, according to court records.

Dotson did not even know Emilliano was back in town until he heard news reports Sunday that the boy was allegedly abducted from an East Side park.

"I want to know what happened," Dotson said. "What did she do to him?"

Mildred Cobbs, the biological grandmother of Terry's oldest son, said she witnessed Terry physically and verbally abuse her two oldest children.

"I was really scared for the kids," said Cobbs, a school crossing guard who Emilliano called 'grandma.' "He was a sweetheart...a sweetheart."

Cobbs sought custody of the oldest boy in 2011 after Terry said she intended to send the boy to live with Emilliano at her grandfather's home in Mississippi, court records show.

She eventually dropped the complaint after Terry agreed to keep the boy in Cleveland.

Still, Terry mentioned several times to Cobb that she wanted nothing to do with the children, saying: "They get on my nerves. I just want them away from me."

Terry is no stranger to a difficult upbringing, according to DCFS records. She was first taken into DCFS custody as a 12-year-old after receiving allegations that Terry was abused.

The county first received reports that Terry was physically abused and neglected when she was just 8, said Madigan. An investigation found indications of neglect but could not substantiate the physical abuse.

Social workers received at least a dozen calls reporting that Terry was being abused, but none was substantiated, said Madigan.

Terry remained in DCFS custody until February, 2011 when the court terminated custody.  She re-entered the system five months later, seeking help with housing, food and energy assistance.

Terry's other two children, ages 5 months and 5 years, were taken into foster care on Sunday when police went searching for Emilliano.

Powerball jackpot raised to $500 million

This is more than enough to run for Congress....I could run for statewide office, but a White House bid is out of the question. $500M is really about 350 cash and after taxes probably around $250M.
With that you could pay your bills, have fun, help some people who matter, give some to charity, do some community projects, drop ten or fifteen million on a race for Congress and still have close to $200M.
Can you imagine going into Watertown Savings Bank and depositing a check for $250 M ?  Lavarnway and Bellinger would be taking you out to lunch everyday, and you'd probably get your own designated teller.

Firefighters battle blaze at Texas Roadhouse

Officials say a West Knoxville restaurant will probably be closed for a couple days after its outside was heavily damaged in a fire.

The fire occurred Tuesday morning at the Texas Roadhouse on Morrell Road near West Town Mall.

A Knoxville Police officer saw the flames and reported the fire around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday.

KFD Spokesman, D.J. Corcoran said, "Quick action on the officers part and quick response from the fire department definitely saved this and kept that fire from extending to other parts of the restaurant."

The building sustained heavy smoke and water damage inside according to Corcoran.  Also, the outside and inside was burned near the lobby.

East Tennessee pharmacy a family tradition

Anyone who walks into David Dew's business can expect a friendly greeting.

"I try to make a point, if you come here once, the next time you come in that door I'm going to call you by your name," said the long-time pharmacist.

He runs "The Corner Drug" in Lake City, nearly 70 years after his father, Carl Dew, originally took over the business.

"He always said, if the Lord let him get up and go to work six days a week, he'd get up and go to church on Sunday."

The duo worked together behind the counter for decades, before the elder Dew passed away last year. Now, as David starts to consider retirement, he is preparing a third generation pharmacist to fill his role.

Dew's daughter, Jessica Thompson, has been working off and on at the pharmacy since high school.

"I like the interaction with people; we're like a big family here," she said. We know all the people, we know all customers. It's just exciting to know you're giving back to the community."

Now married and with two children, Thompson realized she wasn't using her English literature degree from the University of Tennessee in her work. Instead of a new job, she opted for a new degree.

"I was like, 'why am I working here and not being a pharmacist?' It just didn't really make sense," she laughed.

Thompson enrolled into South College's Pharmacy School, with her family's full support. It took hard work and dedication to complete the coursework required before the doctoral program even began.

"I was just impressed she put that much hard work to get that far," her father said. "And stayed with it, and very dedicated. It was no easy task."

South College celebrates new doctoral candidates with a ceremony, where students are given their traditional white coats. During Jessica's ceremony, her father joined her on stage for the official presentation.

"I was very proud, I almost cried," Dew said with a smile.

His daughter adds, "It meant a whole lot to me and a whole lot to him. It was neat, just made it feel official."

As Thompson works toward her new degree, she will continue to help out at the family pharmacy. Someday, it will be hers to carry on the family tradition.

"It's an honor to be included in the same group of professionals that my dad and grandfather were," she said.

"This is a small town. People want to have a relationship with people that they trust to take care of their medications."

St. Lawrence County Property Taxes To Jump 13.4% | WWNY TV 7

Is an extra $109 a year for the average homeowner too big a price to keep the "Big County" chugging along ?  Not really.
St. Lawrence County property taxes will go up 13.4% and some 50 positions will be eliminated as lawmakers there, like many in Congress, decided 'no new taxes' is not the mantra in an Obama second term.
If you are a part of the system...if you have or a person close to you has a county job, the extra taxes are miniscule. For others, it's just a headline that no one really follows that closely.

“Fireman Ed” says he will stop leading chants at New York Jets home games - NYPOST.com

Chronic losing and the feeling of being a Charlie Brown with the football pulled away is a powerful emotion. I remember when my former radio collegue Joe Brosk was an avid Bills fan, but after the four in a row and unraveling of football in Western NY a few years back, Joe just gave up the sport and his team cold turkey. Enough of the emotional roller coaster..enough of investing Sunday after Sunday in cult like worship of false prophets.
That's what the resignation of 'Fireman Ed' as JETS fan in chief reminds me of.
Ed Anzalone will no longer lead the chants or wear the funny hats. The losing is part of it, but the nastiness and coarseness of fandom has left the former NYC smoke-eater disillusioned and forelorn.
JETS Super Fan Fireman Ed Ends the Chant

I am still dealing with the humiliation of the Thanksgiving thrashing at the hands of the rascals from Boston, and find it harder and harder to be upbeat.
Is the forty-plus year chant of 'wait til next year' enough ?   I'll tell you after next Sunday's game against Phoenix.
And to think I did my Christmas shopping at the JETS on-line store.

Police: Missing 3-year-old found dead in trash bag

CLEVELAND -- Police say the body of missing 3-year-old Cleveland boy Emiliano Terry was found in trash bags at the Waste Management recycling center in Oakwood.

During a 9:45 p.m. press conference Monday at the Justice Center, police said they have arrested Emiliano's mother, Camilia, and she is being held in jail.

The discovery of Emiliano's body was made about 4 p.m. Monday. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office will perform an autopsy Tuesday morning to determine the cause of death.

Camilia Terry's other two children are now in the custody of Cuyahoga County Children & Family Services.

Police say they became suspicious of 20-year-old Camilia Terry's statements when they became "inconsistent" earlier Monday.

As the FBI evidence team was searching the streets around Terry's apartment near East 130th Street and Broadway Avenue about 2 p.m. Monday, they noticed a Waste Management truck picking up recycling containers and recyclables.

They contacted Waste Management after getting the number of the truck and asked that the truck be held at the Oakwood facility until they could arrive.

Once they arrived, they had the truck dump its load inside the facility and began searching through the bags. They found the body double-bagged after opening several bags.

Police were asked if they knew when Emiliano had been killed and they said that the Medical Examiner's Office would make the determination Tuesday as to how long Emiliano had been dead.

Police said the investigation is now in the hands of the Cleveland Police Homicide Unit and they will be meeting with the prosecutor's office Tuesday morning to determine the charges against Camilia Terry.

Police: 10 more Jackson High victims ID'ed in coach investigation

JACKSON TOWNSHIP -- Police tell Channel 3 that 10 more victims have been identified on video in the investigation into former coach Scott Studer's videotaping of Jackson High School students naked in the boys' locker room.

That brings the total number of victims to 74.

Police say Studer, 46, the head freshman basketball coach put cameras in the boys' locker rooms shower area on multiple occasions dating back to 2005.

He remains in the Stark County jail, so far facing eight felony charges of illegal use of a minor in nudity.

Studer is well known in the community, and was well liked by the students at Jackson High School. He has coached basketball for 27 years and is an alumni of Jackson High School.

He resigned the day he was arrested.

In addition to coaching, he'd been employed as a building aide, checking visitors in and out of the front office. Studer also had access to security cameras at the school.

Jackson Township Police assisted U.S. Postal Inspectors in serving a search warrant at Studer's home Nov. 14, in a separate investigation of child pornography.

Inside the home, they discovered media, containing footage from inside the basketball locker room shower area.

Upon questioning Studer, police learned Studer had assembled and disassembled hidden cameras in the locker room as he went in and out of the facility over the years.

Police believe more charges are pending, on a state and federal level. Investigators are not sure how many hours of footage Studer recorded, or how many students he filmed over the years.

High School parents who found out about the investigation through their children are angry that the district did not notify parents first.

If you think the big shopping days are done, you're wrong.

There's still "Green Monday" coming up on Dec. 10. eBay coined the term since the second Monday in December is its best sales day.

Rice to meet with 3 Senate critics - POLITICO.com

In a move that could heal the wound over Benghazi and grease the way to Foggy Bottom,  UN Ambassador Susan Rice is meeting this week with her three harshest critics....Senators McCain, Ayotte and Graham.
Ms. Rice will try to explain why she delivered such clearly misleading accounts of the September 11 Benghazi raid. This weekend Senator John McCain backed off a bit, saying Ms. Rice was not to blame for the accounts and that the information she got had been massaged to alter the message.
This is a good thing as a messy confirmation fight for a new Secretary of State is hardly needed and its unclear whether Ms Rice did wrong or was just a victim of the White House PR offensive during the campaign.

Council Hears Woolworth Building on Brink...But Hopeful Developers Make Their Case

City Council heard promising and depressing news about the Woolworth Building from the new developers attempting to make a go of the project on hold for many years.
First of all, the talk five or six years back of a luxury hotel was never a possibility, but the current plan for apartments and commercial space is in keeping with today's downtowns.
The developers were in town to address the Council. Obviously this type of project only happens because its subsidized in some manner. The current state of the building is saveable but increasingly dire.
Back In The Day

Developer David Gallo ask to use a parcel across the street for parking...formally abandoned an effort to relocate the bus station, and requested Council approve a soon to be made request for tax abatement.
In other Council action, lawmakers committed to making Sunday hours at the Library continue. City staff was instructed to work with the Library Board of Directors following a pilot program deemed a success.
Council discussed drinking water flouridation now deemed one of the "ten greatest public health accomplishments of the 20th Century."  That makes it hard to oppose, but the discussion was interesting as a couple local dentists and some public health poobahs watched.
Council also learned it will likely have to readvertise and auction the warehouse taken for taxes on West Main Street.

Maryville church celebrates new facility with parade

An East Tennessee church celebrated new beginnings Sunday by moving into a new facility.

After nearly six years worshiping in a local high school auditorium, members of RIO Revolution Church in Maryville officially met for service at their new home. Hundreds participated in a parade where members marched from the old meeting spot at Heritage High School to the new location on East Lamar Alexander Parkway.

"We had 39 people that met originally," said Pastor Hepperly. "And now we've just build a sanctuary that's got... 1000 seats. Church has grown to approximately 700 on a Sunday morning."

In addition to more seating, the new facility features several classrooms and a new light and sound system. Church leaders say they will continue to expand. Future plans include sporting fields, walking trails, an indoor basketball arena and eventually another sanctuary to seat several thousand more people.

"We've been planning and talking about the good things that God has in store for our church and so today's the celebration of it. Today's the day it's all come to pass," Hepperly said.

Doug Frye joined as one of the church's original members in 2007.

"The vision was to be able to make a difference in this county," he said. "Not just be a 'status quo' church, [but] something that's alive, something that's actually breathing."

As the congregation settles into their new home, Frye looks forward to many years ahead.

"Our grandchildren will be able to look back and say, 'My grandfather, grandmother, whoever ... was part of this, and now here we are getting to share into it, too. We're planning for the future."

Arson forest fires fueled by dangerous conditions

Dangerous conditions fueled new forest fires this weekend.

Forestry crews and volunteer fire departments continue to fight the often treacherous terrain to contain them.

The Tennessee Department of Agriculture's Forestry Division reports five new fires Saturday in Monroe, Union, Scott, Anderson, and Campbell counties.

Those fires come in addition to four other fires started Sunday in Campbell and Scott counties.

No homes have been damaged so far.

East Tennessee is under the highest fire danger --a five out of five -- thanks to low humidity and high wind gusts.

With little rain in sight, already fatigued forestry crews are concerned.

For two weeks, it's been a similar scene across many parts of East Tennessee.

"It started up in Hawkins County with the big 2,000 acre fire and it's been going ever since," said Asst. Forester Nathan Waters. "The firefighters are really exhausted."

Most of the fires are on steep mountains, forcing crews to use bulldozers and hand tools.

The hardest part for Waters is knowing that people are setting the fires intentionally.

"It's very easy for somebody to get hurt with these arson fires. That compounds the crime right there," Waters said. "We were on a fire yesterday... and I got burned a little bit. There was a fireman that fell and twisted his leg. He was concerned he broke it."

Waters says woods arson is not new. He sees cases every few years. With the current fire conditions, however, it makes it more dangerous than in the past.

The forestry division is not issuing any outdoor burning permits for Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Claiborne, Cocke, Grainger, Greene, Hamblen, Hancock, Hawkins, Jefferson, Knox, Loudon, Monroe, Roane, Scott, Sevier, or Union counties.

The Slow Count Continues in the Remaining Close Senate Race

Democrat Cecilia Tkaczyk is hoping Ulster County, where more Democrats received absentees, will shift the outcome.
It looks like Mr. Amedore has the edge, but it's clear the Senate will be a battleground as one newly elected Democrat from Brooklyn has pledged to sit with the GOP for organization and there are four Democrats claiming they will remain as an independent caucus, again suggesting Senator John Sampson does not have a clear path to being majority leader.

Medical Pot Fans Tout Quick Cash to Albany as Rationale for Their Habit

On the issue of marijuana, while two states have essentially made recreational use legal, there are 18 states allowing medical marijuana which is basicly a way for the camel to get its nose under tent in a different way.
Lobbying is on in Albany for that to happen here, and while no North Country lawmaker would ever publicly support it, the issue may find a way to passage just like same sex marriage.
The current rationale is that it would be a revenue stream, always a way to the heart of pols anxious to keep up spending while not having to raise more obvious taxes.
Of course lots of things seen as sinful are allowed as long as the price is right.
The largest recent example of that is gambling, where just about anything goes as long as Albany has a hand in the till.

Charlie Batch, forced to start at quarterback for Pittsburgh because of injuries to Ben Roethlisberger and Byron Leftwich, was picked off three times and the Steelers (6-5) lost five fumbles, the last on the final play of the game to help the Browns (3-8) beat Pittsburgh for just the second time in 18 games.

There Will Likely Be No "Storms of the Century" This Year

An open letter to the main stream media...particularly the broadcast media

Winter is almost here, but the winter-like weather is already here in parts of upstate.
We all know it will snow...it will blow....there will be icy conditions, and that we need to be aware of our surroundings.
Caution is the order of the day and saving lives is paramount.
However, in reporting the weather, can we keep it in perspective ? Can we not panic the public into staying locked in their homes, afraid of this week's 'storm of the century.' ?
People talk about weather...News executives have caught on and that's why local news consists mostly of talking about the weather...The more hyberbole, the more viewer and listener interest...
I get it...I am in radio.
Motorist in the Ditch Sunday in the Town of Parish

However, throughout the winter months, time after time, the public is spooked by inflammatory weather forecasts. This is particularly true in an area with so many new residents.
I know its true from my retail auto days, when so many people had been convinced you have to have a four wheel drive vehicle.
There will be snowy days...but we also have an unparalleled ability to clear roads quickly...
The recent cancellation of school over "superstorm Sandy" was an example of media hype at the expense of the public.
Retailers lose a lot with all these OMG weather reports...Let's cool it..We all have to make a living.

One of the Fun Times as Mayor...Walking in the Chirstmas Parade

Your 'Mayor Who's There' was one of only two elected officials (Sheriff Burns was the other) to come to the Christmas Parade, but that didn't dampen the enthusiasm of two to three thousand revelers who did come out in brisk but pleasant weather to see Santa and the floats.
The Privateers hockey team was out in force along with an antique pirate boat that shoots rings of smoke to the delight of kids. Team owner Nicole Kidman (oops that's Kirnan) had her team handing things out to kids and families to promote the team.
The City also showed off its new snow plow, equipped with a sander instead of the block of concrete.

The parade is a great way to start the Holiday season. Kudos to people like Stan Zaremba who sets it up every year.

Library Sunday Trial Ruled a Rousing Success

Hate to say 'I told you so' but the completion of a trial program on Sunday hours at the Flower Library has been met with a tremendous response by Library users.
The two temps hired to staff the desk are enthusiastic and helpful, with both hoping they can continue to work Sundays helping the public enjoy this treasure.

Last year I began pushing the idea of Sunday hours after chatting with my Mom, who is an avid library user in NC where her local library sees Sunday's packed with families unable to get their during the week.
The trial program came as a result of the Library Director offering to supervise while part timers were hired to wait on the public.
      Let's make it permanent.

Businesses see Small Business Saturday spike

Right in between the big deals of Black Friday and Cyber Monday is Small Business Saturday.

The promotional campaign, started by American Express in 2010, tries to encourage people to shop locally.

Union Ave. Books in downtown Knoxville offered 10% off to customers as part of the campaign.

In a time of big box stores the small town book shop inspires loyalty.

"I think bookstores in part are small businesses that people really feel compelled to support," says employee John Post. "People make a very conscious decision to come to us."

Post says customers have been asking all week about the event.

"Through out the week people have come in and asked what we are doing and voiced their support small businesses in Knoxville," says Post.

American Express says last year more than 100 million people came together to shop small in their communities.

Business who accepted the American Express card reported a 28% increase in business on that date in 2011 as compared to the year before, according to USA Today.

Gift Gourmet and Interiors in Bearden says several of their customers mentioned the event too.

"We had a much busier morning than usual, and our afternoon picked up as well," says employee Jamie Denovo. "All the people here who own the small businesses live in Knoxville, so we're really grateful for how today went."

But one good day, doesn't make a season.

"I would just like to see more customers show an awareness of shopping locally day to day, not just because it's the Saturday they're supposed to do so," says Post. "I think it's something people should make a part of their lives"

Real Christmas tree sales increase last year, farmers hope for continued growth

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas... at least on the hood of Maria Huertas' Subaru Saturday.

"My daughter actually found our tree. We got a Frasier Fir," the Oak Ridge mother said.

Struggling to tie up this 5-footer on the hood of the car is just another sign that Christmas season is here.

"It's a tradition, we started it last year. We decided we were tired of the fake tree and spending hours to make the branches look nice," she added.

The Bluebird farm in Claxton has been selling Christmas trees for some 35 years now. Owner Leo Collins said every year more people become customers because there are fewer Christmas tree farms.

"Big trees, small trees -- we specialize in large trees so we sell a lot of large trees," the farmer said.

In the last five years, the pendulum has been swinging on Christmas tree sales -- all thanks to the fragile economy, Collins said.

According to the National Christmas Tree Association, in 2007 there were 31.3 million real trees sold; one year later it dropped to 28.2 million. It was hovering around that statistic until last year, when it picked up to 30.8 million real trees.

"We'll have anywhere from 700 to 1,200 available (this year)," Collins added.

A single-year increase is not enough, as Collins hopes to sell more green to make more green this weekend.

"The way it's going, it'll be good I think," said Collins.

As family after family picks their pine and takes home a slice of Christmas.

"It's a tradition, we started it last year. We decided we were tired of the fake tree and spending hours to make the branches look nice," Huertas said.

Tennessee defeats Kentucky 37-17

Tennessee Vols (5-7, 1-7 SEC) earned their first SEC win of season with a 37-17 victory over the Kentucky Wildcats at Neyland Stadium in Knoxville on Saturday.

UT interim head coach Jim Chaney led the Vols into their last game of the season against Kentucky, after former head coach Derek Dooley's departure.

The Volunteers began to pull away from the Kentucky Wildcats as the fourth quarter began in Knoxville with a score of 34-17.

UT quarterback Tyler Bray threw four touchdowns. Tight end Mychal Rivera, wide receivers Codarrelle Patterson and Justin Hunter and Zach Rogers all caught touchdown passes.

Rivera's 29-yard catch gave Tennessee a 34-17 lead. For the rest of the game, Kentucky was never able to catch up.

Now both Tennessee and Kentucky's searches for new head coaches begins. Last weekend, Tennessee fired Derek Dooley after a disappointing loss to Vanderbilt on Saturday, 17. Earlier this month, Kentucky also fired its head football coach Joker Phillips a day after the team lost to Vanderbilt as well.

Fans show support for Vols during time of transition

Despite a victory against the Kentucky Wildcats, the Vols have faced a tough season.

A series of disappointing losses led to the end of head coach Derek Dooley. But many Vol fans didn't let that stop them from supporting their team Saturday, even if there were fewer of them.

The announcers said 81,841 people attended the game compared to 101,000 the last time the Vols hosted Kentucky in 2010.

Life long Vol fan, Lynn Murray, said his tailgating spot doesn't look like it did at the beginning of the year.

"There's not many people up here. This place is usually packed," said Murray.

Much of the fan's hope faded early on, after Florida beat the team at home, followed by every other SEC team the Vols played until Saturday.

"This has been a disheartening season for me," he said.

Victories are not the only reason Murray and his friends come to the games.

"The seniors deserve this. The fifth year seniors were recruited by Coach Fulmer. If you're a true Tennessee fan you're here today," he said.

"[I] drove all the way from Fort Smith, Arkansas which is a 10 hour drive," said Daniel Sturgill. "It's been a tough year but I still wanted to come back and see a game and support them. I knew the crowd wasn't going to be very big and they needed all the support they could get."

Now that the season is behind them, fans are looking ahead. A new coach is on the way and that brings with it a new sense of hope.

"There's better days around the corner," said Murray.

Although they do not know who that new coach will be yet, fans say they'll be there next season to cheer him on.

Not Every Christmas Event Involves Shopping

You would think the Christmas season is solely about storming a shopping mall to stand in line to get a cheap TV.
There are actually non-competitive, traditional events suggesting Christmas is still Christmas.
There is the parade today in Watertown. It's a simple, traditional gathering of marchers, homemade floats and local businesses ushering in the season.
Up at the Thompson Park Zoo there are special weekend activities as the facility is decked out or the holidays.
Next Friday the Christmas Tree lighting ceremony is held on Public Square.
Quietly in many venues and events, the season is celebrated while the MSM fixates on the commercialism and occasional bad behavior associated with "Black Friday", a name that suggests the celebration of the birth of Christ should somehow have a dark side.
      Enjoy the parade today.

No Powerball winners; jackpot for next drawing at $425M - NYPOST.com

I supposed you want to win the Powerball Lottery prior to the expiration of the "Bush Tax Cuts."
With no winner last night, the multi-state lottery balloons to a $425M "jackpot", which is really a cash value prize of $278M. That number is then subject to taxes.
     So you might clear $175M.

Let's see...pay off bills....help out my Mom and brother.....as well as a few friends...
Help out the Urban Mission and the Salvation Army.....Leverage some community projects I am interested in like the Library, the Arena, Woolworth Building, Sewall's Island...
A sensible person could do a lot of good, live well, invest prudently and still have enough cash on hand to keep living well and doing good for years to come.
But first you have to buy a ticket which are on sale at Fort Pearl Tavern on Pearl Street.

Obama's NYC Vote Shows How Unwinnable NY is for the GOP

A tally of votes in NYC shows President Obama carried the Big Apple with 81% of the vote and actually scored 100% in several election districts.
Traditionally, Republicans lose the City in hopes of making it up on Long Island and upstate. Even though, a GOP candidate needs to get in the 30s to have even a shot at that...Scoring in the teens in the City's diverse populace is indicative of the problems Republicans have in forming a governing majority.
Mitt Romney's only highlights were the Brooklyn districts where Orthodox Jews vote, and he did tie the President in the ED where Donald Trump lives. The Bronx was over 90% Obama and the President carried usually GOP Staten Island.
Meanwhile upstate Mr Obama was also winning supposed GOP strongholds.

Mosquito Lake: Missing boater found dead

TRUMBULL --  Fire crews say one person is dead after a boat sank in Mosquito Lake early Saturday morning.

The Trumbull County Sheriff's Office say that the boat flipped sometime around 6:30 a.m.

According to Fire Chief Dennis Lewis, three men left shore around 6:00 a.m. from the main dock of Mosquito Lake. About a half hour the boat began to sink. The 3 men yelled for help and were heard by other duck hunters on shore.

The hunters called called 911.

Rescue crews were able to get to two of the three victims. They could not immediately locate the last man.

After searching for the most of the day, crews located the last victim. Daniel Khalil, 35, was found dead about a mile from where the boat sank.

The first two victims were transported to St. Joseph Medical Hospital where they were treated and released.

Ohio State Buckeyes defeat Michigan 26-21

Written by
WKYC Web Staff

COLUMBUS -- The Ohio State Buckeyes have defeated the Michigan Wolverines, 26-21, and have completed their season with a perfect 12-0 record.

Carlos Hyde ran for 146 yards and No. 4 Ohio State's defense shut out 20th-ranked Michigan in the second half completing an improbable 12-0 season for the Buckeyes.

It was a sweet win for the Buckeyes, just 6-7 last season with a loss to their archrivals in a transitional year in which they were facing heavy NCAA penalties. After Urban Meyer took the job as head coach a year ago, they were socked with a bowl ban after this season - and still ran the table.

Ohio State (12-0, 8-0 Big Ten) is ineligible for a BCS national title but still has an outside shot at finishing No. 1 in the final Associated Press Top 25 if other contenders lose. Michigan (8-4, 6-2) will now await a minor bowl bid.

Drew Basil matched his season output with four field goals and the defense did the rest, forcing three turnovers in the second half. It was played before 105,899, the largest crowd ever to witness "The Game" in Columbus.

This is the 6th perfect season for the Buckeyes. Some polls say the Buckeyes would be ranked as high as No. 3 in BCS standings if they were not on probation.

Snow Spotted Near the 'Cuse

The climate change that gave us such a warm winter last year is grudgingly giving way to the real deal of the season.
A photo from Newzjunky shows Route 81 near Hancock Airport in Syracuse and the snow is a fallin'
So far nothing up our way but a quick flurry mid afternoon.

Sure Beats Working for a Living...Ungrateful Judges Carp Over Salaries

When you are a judge you don't have to maintain an office...or staff...or hustle up customers. You work for a salary but you do get benefits including medical and the state's generous pension plan.
Now some judges are complaining their recently raised pay is not enough. Granted it was left unchanged for years, but that's politics.
I haven't heard our city judges complain about their new pay.  In fact, I think they approciate the opportunity to have such a good job.

Seattle Police: Don't Bogart That Joint

In NNY on December 6, marijuana is the evil weed...a gateway drug...something you can be cuffed and stuffed for and something the authorties can hold press conferences over when they sieze a couple dozen plants in the Town of New Bremen or under some grow lights in someone's basement.
In NNY the prohibition on marijuana continues while across the continent in Washington State the demon weed is legal and police in Seattle are putting out a guide to the legal use of it.

Unknown is whether the US Justice Department will try to put a damper on all this, but I don't think so as President Obama has an evolving view on the war on drugs such as he did on same sex marriage.
Of course in Washington there are the caveats..You have to be 21, but that will fail as mightily as the 21 year old drinking age. There are limits on the amount you can have and the means of selling weed in regulated stores is still a year off.
Washington is one of two states to effectively end the prohibition on marijuana and these chinks in the armor of the War on Drugs will be interesting to watch.
